Private label body care: washes, lotions, butters and oils
Made by Anadoris buyer guide · Updated · 6 min read
Private label body care covers body washes, lotions, creams, butters, oils, scrubs and hand and foot care, made by a manufacturer and sold under your brand. Customers buy it on scent and feel, so most lines are built around one signature fragrance, with each texture paired to a pack that suits it: pump, tube, jar or bottle.

Private label body care lets you sell washes, moisturisers and oils under your brand without running a factory. The manufacturer supplies the formula, fills your chosen pack and provides the documents an importer needs. Ready formulas are the quickest start, from 500 units per product; custom textures and fragrances are quoted per brief.
Body care is used daily and generously, so fragrance and value per pack matter more than they do in face care. Our body care range is made in our facility in Ambala, India.
Which body care products should you launch with?
A body care line usually follows the shower routine: cleanse, then moisturise, with extra care for hands, feet and dry areas. The main product types are:
| Product | Texture and feel | Who buys it | Common packs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body wash and shower gel | Clear gel or creamy wash, foaming | Everyone; the easiest entry product | Pump bottles, flip-cap bottles, refill pouches |
| Body lotion | Light emulsion, quick absorbing | Daily users, warm climates | Pump bottles, tubes |
| Body cream | Richer emulsion, more cushion | Dry skin, cooler climates, evening use | Jars, tubes |
| Body butter | Dense, butter-rich, melts on skin | Very dry skin, gifting | Jars, tins |
| Body and massage oil | Dry or rich oil, glow finish | Post-shower routines, spa and massage | Bottles with pumps, droppers, mist sprays |
| Hand, foot and nail care | Creams, balms, scrubs, cuticle oils | Gifting, travel, seasonal routines | Tubes, small jars, sticks |
| Body scrub and polish | Sugar or salt grains in oil or cream | Weekly ritual, gifting | Jars, tubes |
Most brands start with a body wash and a matching lotion or butter in one signature scent, then add oils, scrubs and hand care. See body wash, lotions and creams, body butters, body and massage oils and hand, foot and nail care.
How do you choose between a lotion, cream, butter and oil?
These products overlap. Decide by feel, climate and price position:
- Lotion spreads easily over large areas and absorbs fast. It suits humid climates and daily use, and works well in a pump.
- Cream feels richer and leaves more of a soft finish. It suits drier skin and cooler months.
- Butter is dense and indulgent, built on shea, cocoa, mango or kokum butter, and suits gifting. Our bases and butters show the materials available.
- Oil gives glow and slip. Dry oils absorb faster; richer oils double as massage and spa products.
Whichever you choose, keep claims cosmetic: moisturises, softens, smooths, leaves skin feeling nourished. Avoid wording that suggests a skin condition is being addressed medically.
Why does fragrance matter so much in body care?
Fragrance is often the reason a customer picks up a body product, and the reason they come back for it. Plan it with care:
- Pick a signature scent per collection. Use the same scent across wash, lotion, butter and oil so customers can layer it.
- Test the scent in every base. A fragrance smells different in foam, cream and oil, and on skin after an hour.
- Offer an unfragranced option. Some customers want a quiet product for sensitive-feeling skin.
- Watch allergen labelling. Several markets require named fragrance allergens on the label above set levels.
- Check colour and stability. Some fragrances darken pale creams over time; stability testing shows this before launch.
For botanical scent profiles, our essential oils and blends can be used within a fragrance brief.
Pump, tube or jar: which pack suits each texture?
Body care is used generously, often in the shower, so packs must dose easily and cope with wet hands.
- Pump bottles suit body washes, lotions and oils, especially in larger family sizes.
- Tubes suit hand creams, foot creams, travel sizes and creams that must stay hygienic.
- Jars suit butters, scrubs and rich creams that customers scoop.
- Bottles with flip caps or disc caps suit washes and oils at accessible price points.
- Eco and refillable packs suit washes and lotions sold with refills.
Run compatibility tests on the real pack: oils can affect some plastics, scrubs can block pumps, and butters can soften in heat. Our custom packaging service covers printed bottles, decorated jars and cartons.
What should a body care brief include?
- Audience and climate. Who buys it, where they live and when they use it.
- Product list and textures. Wash, lotion, cream, butter, oil, scrub and hand or foot care, with the feel you want for each.
- Hero ingredients. Butters, oils or botanicals to feature, and anything to exclude.
- Fragrance. Reference scents, intensity, and whether one scent spans the collection.
- Packs and sizes. Full size, travel size and any gift set formats.
- Markets and channels. Retail, online, spa, hotel or corporate gifting, and target countries.
- Quantities. Units per product for the first order.
Body care often sells in sets. Our sachets and gift sets service covers minis, kits and gift boxes, and our hotel amenities service covers small formats and refills for hospitality.
Which documents and checks does body care need?
Expect an INCI ingredient list, a certificate of analysis per batch, a safety data sheet, stability and pack compatibility results, and support for the safety assessment or product information file your market needs. See testing and documents for what we provide.
Frameworks that may apply include the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, UK cosmetics regulation, US FDA requirements under MoCRA, India's Cosmetics Rules 2020 and GCC labelling requirements. Confirm exact requirements with your importer or regulatory adviser before printing labels.
Our facility is ISO certified and GMP-compliant, and Halal and Kosher documentation is available on applicable products.
What drives the cost and timeline of a body care line?
The main drivers are which butters and oils you use and how much of the formula they make up, fragrance choice and dosage, pack size and decoration, gift boxes and order quantity per product. Ready formulas in stock packs are fastest. Custom fragrance, custom textures and printed packs add sampling and supplier time. Ask for quotes on two pack options, such as a printed bottle and a labelled stock bottle, so you can see what decoration adds. Our how it works page explains each stage, and fulfilment and export covers shipping to your market.
How should you structure a body care collection?
A collection works when each product has a clear job and the line reads as a set. A simple structure:
- One signature scent. Build a wash, a lotion or butter and an oil around it, so customers can layer the same scent.
- One quiet option. An unfragranced or lightly scented version widens your audience.
- One gifting format. A boxed trio, a mini set or a hand cream set gives you a product for festive seasons and corporate gifting.
- One seasonal or limited scent. Add this only after the core sells, to give regular customers something new.
Keep packs consistent. One bottle shape in different sizes, with label colour signalling the scent, keeps reorders simple and the shelf tidy.
What mistakes should you avoid when launching body care?
- Approving a scent on a blotter only. Smell it in each base, on skin and after a few hours before you commit.
- Choosing a pack that fights the texture. Butters do not pump and thin lotions spill from wide jars. Match pack to product.
- Ignoring heat. Butters and balms can soften in warm transit and storage. Ask for stability results across the conditions your stock will face.
- Labels that fail when wet. Body washes live in the shower. Use labels and inks suited to humid use.
- Launching too many scents. Each scent multiplies stock, labels and documents. Start small and grow on sales data.
- Skipping travel sizes. Minis let new customers try a scent cheaply and suit hotel, spa and gifting orders.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for private label body care?
Ready body care formulas start from 500 units per product. Custom formulas, custom fragrances, printed packs and gift boxes are quoted per brief, because raw material batches and packaging suppliers set their own minimums. Tell us your target quantities and we will confirm what fits.
What is the difference between body lotion and body butter?
Body lotion is a light emulsion that spreads easily and absorbs fast, so it suits daily use and warm climates. Body butter is dense and rich, built on butters such as shea or cocoa, and suits very dry-feeling skin and gifting. Many lines offer both in the same scent.
Can one fragrance run across my whole body care line?
Yes, and most brands do this so customers can layer products. The same fragrance can smell different in a wash, a lotion and an oil, so approve it in every base. Check fragrance allergen labelling for your markets, as some require named allergens on the label.
Which packaging suits body butters and scrubs?
Jars suit butters and scrubs because customers scoop them and the thick texture will not flow through a pump. Wide-mouth jars make the last of the product easy to reach. Test butters in the jar for softening in heat, and check that scrub grains do not affect the seal.
Can you make body care gift sets and travel sizes?
Yes. We supply minis, sachets, kits and gift boxes alongside full sizes through our sachets and gift sets service. Sets let customers try a scent or texture before committing to full size, and they suit corporate gifting. Quantities and box options are quoted per brief.
